Relines are usually performed when there has been a change in the underlying tissues, or significant bone loss. This change will create a gap beneath the denture, and likely cause undesirable mobility of loss or retention. Change in weight, tooth loss, or sickness can also lead to issues with fit.
The bite position, existing teeth and acrylic base(s) must be in good condition and have minimal wear for a reline to be successful. An impression of your oral tissue is taken inside your denture(s) to provide a working model. New acrylic base material is added to your denture to produce a correct fit.
This is a similar, but more in depth procedure than a reline. A rebase is usually performed when all of the acrylic needs to be replaced due to; a broken denture, weakened/old acrylic, or in some cases there has been significant changes in the mouth and a regular reline not suffice.
